Justin Murphy

I am a writer and independent scholar based in Austin, Texas. I write about philosophy, social science, technology, and the independent life of the mind.

From 2014 to 2019, I was a professor of Political Science at the University of Southampton. My work has appeared in International Studies Quarterly, the British Journal of Political Science, Foreign Affairs, and the New Statesman. My work across X, YouTube, podcasts, and email has reached an audience of roughly 75,000 people.

After leaving academia, I founded Other Life, a media and education company dedicated to independent scholarship. Its essays, newsletter, podcast, lectures, courses, books, and experiments are preserved here. I also founded Indie Scholars, a one-year program for serious intellectual work outside conventional institutions.

I live in Austin with my wife and son.
